What are the best things to do in France (all of France, not just Paris =P )?

  • So basically, could you guys list the best things to do in ALL parts of France? Favorite activities, museums, outdoor things, architecture? :) Also, things that are overrated ...show more

  • Answer:

Too many to list, France is the biggest country in Europe bar the Russian Federation, around 1000 kims north/south to 1000 kims east/west and 36,000 villages, towns, cities. I'll try to list a few. outdoor: char à voile (land sailing) on the long northern beaches. Mountain climbing (9 moutains ranges, old and new + old volcanoes + sea cliffs on the Riviera) Trekking, hiking, canyoning, river rafting, sailing, horse riding, skiing... you name it we probably have it. Cities and places to visit: Lille, Strasbourg, the Loire Valley (Tours etc), Lyon, Marseille, Carcassone, Bordeaux, Mont St Michel, Orleans, Annecy, Provins, the Peace Memorial of Caen, Vulcania (a centre on volcanoes in the middle of the volcano park), the coal mining museum of Lewarde... Architecture: Palaces from Renaissance (Loire valley) to Napoleon (Rueil Malmaison), castles galore, old medieval cities, towns or village at every turn, old Renaissance places, le Corbusier cities, the Millau bridge... Overated: Cannes, Disneyland :)

I studied abroad in Strasbourg, France. Alsace is a unique part of the country that blends French and German culture. Some of the architecture in the region is almost a thousand years old. The European Parliament and Council of Europe are also located there as well as museums, parks, good restaurants, and bars. There are some dishes unique to the area too such as tarte flambee. I found the majority of people to be very friendly as well.

I would say Provence is a beautiful area to visit. You can hike in the country side (love the lavender fields) or take a dip in the Mediterranean. Lots of places to snorkel. It's also nice to take a stroll through small medieval villages (Le Castellet), or see Castles (chateau d'if, in Marseilles).

You HAVE to go to Provence (in Luberon). Luberon is a wonderful place full of nice villages. there, you just need to travel around and see beautiful places, no need for museums or activities. Mont-st-michel and bretagne are nice places
