I would camp at the campground on the banks of the Rhone right next to the castle at Tarascon. It is in the perfect location for sightseeing in the south of France.

The Gironde region on the coast to the North of Bordeaux is very good and full of campsites - see http://www.uk.tourisme-gironde.cg33.fr/ The drive down from a channel port isnt too bad

caution, in north of france we have around 20°c, in south its more 27°c. if you want going camping, maybe Dordogne could be good (near Bordeaux) and people is very nice, or on the coast of Pyrénées (Basque country)... so i hope you'll have nice holiday/week-end

The Franche Compte area. The fresh walnuts are just about ready now, and they grow wild in that area. The auberges are great and the food really good. You can cross over into Switzerland (Basle) by tram and stroll along the banks of the Rhine
