Speaking loud communicates better in noisy environments. I don't have any particular problem distinguishing final consonants, of which English uses many, in noisy environments - but I normally have the context, and the communication to be done is simple at best ("Let's get out of here!"). I also don't associate noisy environments with any particular language. There are places where speaking loud is considered normal or at least not rude, and I find myself deliberately speaking quietly to make peopel strain to listen to me. Passive-aggressive, or something.

When I first began learning Chinese (Mandarin), it was my impression that native speakers were able to make themselves heard in surprisingly noisy situations with relatively little effort. I've long wanted to know whether there could be anything to this, so I've promoted the question to a few people, and would love to hear people's ideas and impressions.
