  Dodgy - hardly - Paris is probably one of the safest cities in the world. Some pic-pockets. Some lost purses. There hasn't been a major problem involving tourists in years. Last year a young American was found dead in a lonely suburban area. First such case in 14 years. To visit strictly non tourist area and meet people who only speak French, you might try this. (and it works). Just take the metro (any line) and when you come to a stop where quite a few exit, just get off and you will find yourself in an area that most assuredly you have never seen and you will surely be fascinated with the super friendly and courteous neighbors. P S I have tried this and it has been a blast. Never realized how many wonderful neighborhoods there are in Paris.
