Can koi fish really live to be over 200 years old?

I recently read an article about a Japanese koi named Hanako who lived to be 226 years old. It's hard to believe, can a fish expert fill me in on the likelihood of something like ...show more

Answer:
The oldest fish was a Koi named Hanako that died in 1977. She was 226 years old indeed, they determined her age the same way you would determine a tree's age, by counting the rings on one of her scales under a microscope. She'd been passed down through the family from generation to generation and lived in a pond with equally ancient Koi that were all over 100 years old. Of course, this is certainly NOT the average. On average, they live about 50 years, with Hanako being on the faaarrr right side of the bell curve. They were able to live so long because they were raised in a pond that was fed continuously from a mountain stream, giving them fresh cold water that koi thrive in.

It's true. I can't promise that one fish was 226 years old, but koi do live quite long. Visit many of the koi in traditional Japanese gardens and you'll see some very big ones. They've always been chosen as specimen fish in Asian gardens because of their longevity. They are slow growers compared to gamefish and most other aquarium fish, so when one's big it's definitely old. One park I visited (it was actually a koi museum) had some prize specimens supposedly 70+ years old. They were as long as my bed is wide, so I don't question that.

No one koi lived to 226 this does not mean they all can though. they usually live to around 50 years and die usually from disease at this age because their immune system packs in. Sturgeon and sterlets live to around 80-150 years old I beleive. the fish they extract caviar from.

We know for certain that goldfish and large Cichlids can live over 20 years with proper care. I would say intmay be possible but I think the record keeping may be suspect

No, koi usually live to be 50 if they have proper care, which is honestly rare in the aquarium hobby
