How do I connect component audio cables to rca audio cables?

Can you connect 2 sets of component cables together w/ a female-to-female RCA adaptor?

  • Answer:

No - this wont work. Video signals need to have cables & connectors that are built to handle the high-frequency signals. This is why all video cables are made with 75 ohm coax. The RCA barrel connectors are for audio - and do not maintain the proper impedance. Do this: - Being careful to cut exactly the same length off - cut the RCA male plugs off of your extension component cables 1 inch from the plug. - Take the cut cables to Radio Shack and have them help you find CATV "F" connectors that fit the coax. The coax could be RG-59 or it could be RG6 - hard to tell. Buy 10 of the "F" connectors and 3 "F to F" barrel connectors. - Practice putting the "F" connectors on the cut one-inch ends before you attack your real component cables. Then carefully put "F" connectors in place of the RCA Male connectors. You need 3 for the wires in the wall, and 3 for your extension component cable. - Use the "F to F" barrel connector to join things. Use a wrench/pliers to tighten them down real good. (The "F" connector will maintain the 75 ohm impedance a lot better than the RCA plugs. Professional gear uses BNC connectors - but these are just quick-release versions of the "F" connector design.)

This is a problem that could have multiple causes. Some things to check; Have you used the cables that are already there, successfully, before? Are you using crummy cables (if you paid less than $7.00 for the cables or they came with the product, the answer is yes)? Is the connection secure? Is the TV on the right input? Is your DVD setup to push video out of component instead of composite or S-video? If it's Blu-Ray, is the resolution set properly? Are the colors matched up properly?
