  • Answer:

Some home theater in a box does not provide allot of power to listen to them at loud volume. You should have an optical audio input in the back of your home theater. You need to purchase an optical cable and then connect one end from the tv and the other end to the home theater. This will provide you a surround sound. Keep in mind that most tv program are only in stereo and not in surround sound. Programs that are label with Dolby Digital are in surround sound. Before investing in a home theater in a box, always demo the system at the store to make sure of the sound quality is good enough for what you want. Bargain price home theater are cheap and not very reliable. Hope this will help you out.

You should be able to use it for both if set up right. If the sound is coming through the surround sound system I don't know why you'd need it coming through the tv's speakers too.
