you need a subscription to use the box, i.e watch tv, record ect... your best bet and cheapest solution would be a freesat plus box you don't have to pay any subscriptions, just buy a freesat plus box and so long as you have a satellite dish with a cable going into your house you just plug in and you can start viewing and recording out of the box

You need a subscription from Tivo. There are monthly, annual, or lifetime plans available. Lifetime is a one time payment (~400) but gives you service for as long as the unit is working. It is transferable, so if you sell/give your Tivo to someone, the lifetime service plan goes with it. You will also need to get a cable card from your cable company which will cost you $2/mo or so.
