Answer:
2 GHz dual-core (or really anything dual-core should be efficient) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103775 2 GB or more RAM (no more than 3) If he's willing to pay a lot of money on a video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319 If he's on a lower budget: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127319 I hate to say it but Vista Home Premium, because Vista supports directX10. About a 450w power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148027 a 250gig hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262 And a motherboard that can handle it all. Anything with these specs will handle modern games nicely. I tried my best to find quality parts for good prices

Fast processor, about 3-4Ghz, Loads of RAM, more than 3GB, Operating system: Xp is probably best although i use Vista and its been fine so far, it also comes with direct X 10. I have a Ge-force 8800 graphics card, which will run almost anything. I think newer ones are available though.

You can easily spend lots of money ($3000+) to get a "pimped out" system with all top of the line components. For a cost efffective (most bang for the buck) gaming rig: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 or E6850 (2.66 GHz or 3 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) - very few games actually use/take advantage of quad core processors 2 Gb DDR2-800 RAM - DDR2-1066 is not cost effective, more than 2 Gb is currently not cost effective due to memory addressing issues. nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512 Mb - not the absolute top of the line but very good for its price point. You can spend a lot more money getting a SLI set up (2 graphics cards working together) for a relatively small gain. SATA II, 7200 RPM+ hard drive Windows XP SP2 - Windows Vista not that stable and a resource hog, most games are written originally for Windows

For cheap: * Intel Core Duo 2 2.4Ghz * 2GB of DDR2 800 * GeForce 8800GTS * Hard drive (200-500GB) * CD/DVD burner * Windows XP Pro For expensive: * Intel Quad Core (any) or Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme * 4GB of DDRII PC800 RAM * GeForce 8800GTX SLi configuration * 1TB of hard drive space * DVD writer * Windows XP Pro All depends on his budget. Definitely a Intel Core 2 or an AMD Athlon X2 processor. Definitely a nVidia GeForce 8000 series graphics card.

Something with an NVidia card that has no less than 512MB onboard memory and 4G of RAM.. An Intel CPU.. dual core or quad core, some good speakers.. I'm imagining.. coz for me, the needs come from having to compile really large programs fast and I'll be happpy with such a spec although no big stress on graphics memory. Ask him to look at some cool Alienware specs and rig one up according to those specs. They are built for gaming.
