Answer:
You need a USB cable to connect the printer to the MacBook. The rest should be very easy. Worst case (after you're connected) is that you may need to download drivers for the printer from the Canon website but they should be included in the OS. But the printer needs to be connected to the computer to work unless you have it on some kind of network.

You definitely need the USB cord. My Canon PIXMA didn't come with a USB cord, and there's no way I could make the two work without it.
