1920x1080 is 1080p, but unless you have high-definition movies, you won't notice much improvement in detail. The resolution of a regular DVD is 480p. If you downloaded ripped movies, the quality will be lower, and if you had to compress a large DVD to fit on a single-layer disc, the quality will be lower. Downloading HD movies would take forever, and I doubt your laptop has a blu-ray or hd-dvd drive, but that's what you gotta get if you really wanna get the most out of your new tv. If you play computer games, you can see those in HD, as long as your laptop's graphics card can handle it.
