What does it mean when my laptop has a white screen?

What does it mean when you turn a laptop on & screen is BLACK if you listen carefully it makes a sound?

    As a temporary measure if you have an external monitor or flatscreen TV with a VGA/PC input try plugging it in and see if that works. you would need a VGA cable Fixing it is usually a workshop job, either the backlight bulb has gone or the inverter that powers the backlight has failed. So it's turned on, and the screen stays black? The sound you're hearing is probably the fan. There are so many different things that could cause this that you should just phone the makers of it and see what they say about it.

If you have a monitor, try plugging it into the laptop and then turn it on. Maybe you'll get display output to the monitor. Also, some laptops have a key sequence like 'FN+F8' that switches the display output. That setting might be preventing output to your laptop screen. it's usually F3,F4,F5,F8,or F9. Try holding FN and hitting those keys.
