Ashley, the biggie is learning about your body's nutritional needs and what foods meet those needs which are not meat. This is going to take some study and effort. You don't just stop eating meat, or replace it with nuts. That's not healthy. You'd also need to decide which type of vegetarian you'll be. No mammals, okay. No fowl? How about fish? Shellfish? Will you eat eggs, or dairy products? The more foods you don't eat, the more important it is to make sure you provide your body with appropriate nourishment. You'll also need to devise strategies for family meals where meat is the only protein source being offered, eating at restaurants which don't offer a vegetarian selection, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at the relatives', and so on. But first, educate yourself. The librarian can help you find a book or two by people who know what they're talking about.

Hi Ashley Good advice above. You definitely need to learn how to properly replace meat in your diet to maintain adequate protein. Too many people just eliminate one food and it causes your diet to be improperly balanced. Chicken or fish are obvious alternatives to red meat. If you are not eating either of them try looking for recipes that use tofu. Things like peanut butter, eggs and legumes are other good sources of protein. Do a little research and you will be just fine but you won't lose weight just by turning vegetarian. You need to really look at the food you are eating to create great health while losing weight. There are things that people refer to as super foods, foods that really create great health when we eat them. After being a vegetarian for almost 20years I also became vegan after watching earthlings. I don't think it's something a teen ager should watch alone though. As long as you have a varied diet that is centered on the vegan food pyramid you will be fine. www.chooseveg.com/vegan-food-pyramid.asp

I became Vegan after watching a documentary called Earthlings. It is graphic and violent, but I promise it will be the only reason you need! Going Vegetarian is as simple as not eating meat any more. Yes you need to make sure you have a balanced diet, but the human body is equipped to be very healthy while being vegetarian or vegan. Another thing you will need to do is start reading labels on the products you but, as a lot of them contain hidden animal ingredients! For example, many tinned soups are not Vegetarian as they contain animal stock etc. There are a lot of misconceptions and myths surrounding Vegetarianism, so I suggest you do some research yourself - join a Vegetarian forum, www.vegweb.com is a good one - and ask some like minded people what they do :) Good Luck and stand up for what you believe in! www.earthlings.com
