How do I get Ubuntu to work with my wireless router?

  • Hi. I posted this question on Ubuntu forums, but I didn't get any good answers. So my question is, when I dual install Ubuntu with Windows 7, how do I get the Ubuntu OS to connect ...show more

  • Answer:

Check and see what wireless card you have. If its an Atheros card, there a compatibility issue with many of the cards. If that's the case, you have to either use ndiswrapper so you can use windows drivers for the card, or you can use madwifi drivers. Either way, you have to install them manually, but the ubuntu forums are great for helping with this. Good Luck!

There's no magic to making Ubuntu work with any network. If the system can detect and activate your wireless network card (in the laptop), they you should be good to go. Your router has nothing to do with it. If the router is feeding a wireless signal, then the laptop (with Ubuntu running) should be able to connect to the signal. When you start Ubuntu, you should see the network manager running on the toolbar. Try clicking it and connecting to the network. The only other thing I can imagine is that you have some kind of exotic wireless hardware that Ubuntu can't detect. You mentioned a Cradlepoint router and a Sprint card. I'm guessing that Ubuntu doesn't detect them properly.
