Answer:
Hey, Its a broad question, because different "IT techs" do different jobs. Ill give you a brief "kinda sorta" to narrow it down. HELPDESK: Those are the techs that help users in an office with specific applications on their computer, or troubleshoot their hardware problems. NETWORK ADMIN: Broader scale. They troubleshoot problems with network traffic, servers, etc. DATABASE ADMIN: More complex, these are the people that when an office keeps certain records on an application database, make sure the environment for the database is well. You lose the database, or the server that it sits on, the company is in deep sh*t. CCIE/Router WAN/LAN admin: People that get folks onto the internet and troubleshoot problems with companies unable to get on. Also assisting with permissions, access, etc to what users in their company will be able to have regarding the internet, more importantly what they wont have. IT SECURITY/AUDITING: These are the people that come in and test the integrity of your network, find the security flaws, and recommend change. Also a very nice paying job. DEVELOPMENT: All IT structures change. No one uses the same applications for more than five years. Someone has to plan in which direction they company will go, the best product for the company...etc. These are a few examples, and each one has its own coursework either in college or via tech school. Some, such as CCIE or Database admin, are not a six month learning process...but pay considerably more because of how many people dont do the jobs.

In my company it's a spotty 'erbert with a dodgy greasy haircut who tells you to turn restart your computer as his diagnosis for every problem. Whatever he's paid, it's too much. Useless scrote.
