How do I update Firefox in Ubuntu?

    Ubuntu automatically updates all installed software from it's own software repositories at the same time it updates itself. And, Firefox version 2 is likely the latest version for your older version of Ubuntu Linux. When you try to get the update from the Mozilla website, you get a "Tarball" with a ".tar.gz" file extension. It hasn't been "Ubuntified", meaning there may be other dependent files needed to make it run properly under Ubnuntu. So, delete the Tarball and just make sure you are installing all Ubuntu Updates when available. I would recommend an upgrade to version 8.10 of Ubuntu.

Which version of Ubuntu do you have? Newer versions (8.04 onwards) come with Firefox 3 installed. I'd seriously consider updating your Ubuntu. There is a guide to installing Firefox 3 on older systems (see below) but it's pretty complicated for a newbie

Do you know what version of Ubuntu you are running? Since 8.04, the OS shipped with Firefox 3. Anyways, it should automatically update to the latest version available for the version you have. UPDATE: I would update, at least to 8.04. It is an LTS release, which means it will be updated for 3 years. 8.10 is a great release, but if you are going to update, it might be worth waiting until 9.04 comes out in April, which has 18 months of updates. (like all non-LTS releases) Until it comes out, though, you will be protected with updates for 7.10 BTW, version numbers in Ubuntu mean year and month. So 7.10 is the October 2007 release.
