What are some issues about school zone safety?
-
I'm doing a report on improving school zone safety. Can you name some issues and a suggestion to improve school zone safety? Thanks.

Answer:
1) Excessive speed....... can probably be cured by regularly plonking a cop with a radar gun at either end of it 30-mins either side of when the kids are going to / from school. 2) Blind spots....... things like parked cars, trees, hedges, tight corners making it more difficult for moving vehicles to see whats ahead in case they need to pull-up sharp-ish (e.g. people crossing without looking) 3) Kids behaviour....... sometimes it's not always the best when they're on their way in & out of school. Like when going past one of my old School's at the end of the day, the kids waiting for the bus can often be seen play fighting, swinging like a chimpanzee on the sign-post with the Bus Stop sign attached to it + standing in front of the school buses as they pull-up (pretending to get run over). Then of course they can often be too busy talking to watch where they're going, or listening to their iPOD, etc.

Well, the major issue with school zone safety is obviously speed. Many school zones have enforced speed radars to crack down on those that speed in these zones. The problem with speeding is that there have been accidents, and pedestrian deaths due to speeding. So many zones have crossing guards to protect the children when crossing so they don't dart out in the street. The crossing guard is also there to direct traffic keeping drivers aware that students are crossing. Here are a few tips for parents to increase school zone safety. * Familiarize yourself with school or provider drop-off and pick-up practices and then be sure you always follow them. * Discuss the rules with your child and practice with younger ones. If possible, take your child to the drop-off area and "practice" the procedure at an off-peak time. * Resist the urge to speed or make any traffic rules exception because you are running late. Whipping your car around, getting your child to dash out of the car to reach the classroom before the school bell rings, or encouraging a "drop-and-dash" drop-off is the recipe for disaster in terms of child safety. * Refrain from using your cell phone, palm, or any other distraction while around school zones.
