How can I stop falling asleep while driving?

  • I often get tired and drowsy when driving long distances, is there a way that I can combat this? I am really scared that I'll just fall asleep or something!

    Getting tired and drowsy when driving long distances is quite normal and the thought of falling asleep whilst driving is more than scary, it's horrifying! All the stories about coffee and loud music are a load of crap. Drinking a lot of coffee will work for a while because you have to keep stopping for a pee but that is the secret, break up your drive with regular short breaks. As a professional long haul truckie I clock up around 200,000 miles a year (a million kilometres every 3 years) and I have fallen asleep at the wheel and believe me I am lucky to be alive. I drive road-trains (62 wheelers) pretty well all over Australia and we have a fatigue management plan to stick to. Make your own plan and take regular breaks. On the funny side, the only drink that will keep you awake is ice-water but you don't drink it instead you spill it in your lap it's guaranteed to wake you up!!

From personal experience of long european drives I have found that a short nap, followed by a coffee works for me. Twenty minutes or so, lying down in the car, is a transformation. Once you recognise the symptoms of tiredness just take a break. Don't leave it too long, or you will crash.

Instead of filling yourself with coffee, don't drive while you're tired. If you are tired because you have to wake up early for work, set your alarm clock everyday, at a certain time, and you'll get used to it. And it would help to get more sleep!!!! :]

Thats a good idea buuut i think pretending that if you fall asleep you with get into a horrible car accsedent and you will die if u fall asleep. there just think about that and youll never fall asleep ~.^ trust me haha
