On my Samsung, picture shape is adjusted by the P SIZE button on the remote. There are several options, but for general use, JUST SCAN is the preferred choice. When the program source is being transmitted in wide screen format, the picture is perfect with no stretching nor loss of image at the edges. When the program source is in standard 4:3 format, I do get the blank areas on each side. But the picture is still complete and undistorted. Trying to fill a widescreen display with a standard 4:3 image can't be done without horizontal stretching or sacrificing part of the image.
