How can you download pics from a camera using a card reader instead of a usb Cable?

I have a Nikon Coolpix L6 camera and use Windows XP on my computer. I have never used a card reader. Can you explain?

yes its so simple and fast also u can by a simple card reader of any brand and connect to your pc remove the memory card from camera put it in reader slot your pc will automatically lunch a Microsoft camera and scanner wizard just clik next teb select the photos wich u want to download . u have done !

You have to remove the memory card from the camera and put it in the reader. The card will now show up as a disc drive and (depending on your set up) you'll either have to copy the files across yourself, or they will automatically copy into a dated directory in the Pictures section of your User Documents area.
