    Its a good question. I've never noticed that drop-down menu before. But I think it only keep the record of last few conversations. Its because I can't find some of my earlier conversations. If you are really that desperate, try talking to as many people as you can, then probably the one you want o hide will be erased.

If its the same messenger I'm using you should be able to click the name then right click you get a drop box and it says delete. Or go to contacts there is a delete option.

On one of ur toolbars it will say--DELETE CONTACT or it maybe when you click oon the contact u wanna delete
