Brake lights not working with headlights on?

Why does my 89 chevy truck brake lights stop working when I turn on my headlights?

  • Answer:

My guess is that you either have a failing light switch, or a bad ground somewhere on the vehicle. If it has ever been in a fender bender, check the grounds in that area. FYI the brake lights are independent of the Headlight swithch, but they do interact with back circuits due to shorts and bad grounds. If you are not a tech, you should contact one.

Other answers

It could be as simple as changing your light bulbs in your tail lights. They can burn out the brake light side and still work using the running light side.
