Is it safe to use another DNS server?

System Administration: Is it feasible to use Samba 4 as a central auth, directory, DNS, server for a mostly Linux and Mac environment that sometimes has windows clients or is it still better to use openldap auth, nfs homes, nss Pam ldap, etc?

  • Answer:

In that scenario you are almost better off using OpenDirectory + DNS on an OSX server, or you could go with NIS, but Samba is a complex, problematic solution meant for a big organization with lots of manpower available for configuration.

I would say...  that if you are running a very small network and that is the way you understand how to make it work...  I guess you can.   I don't really understand why you would complicate it with Samba.  If you have a lot of traffic you'll end up with file locking and other similar issues. A linux box could run all those services with ease on a busy  network.  Samba is ok for users to mount their directories from the remote linux server.   I personally prefer sftp or ssh or some more secure protocol.  Whats your reasoning?  Is it that you know how to config a Windows server and want to make those things available from a linux server?
