Could stem cells cure lung cancer?
-
In the future? also why do most people die with this? Can there not be lung transplants? Or intense radiation therapy. Or why hasn't someone invented a mechanical lung?
-
Answer:
The reason that most people die from lung cancer is because by the time you get any symptoms it is usually too late - the cancer has spread to your brain, liver, bones etc. There is intense radiation therapy available, but if the cancer is throughout your entire body then the radiation would kill you before it killed the cancer. There is such a thing as a lung transplant but if the cancer is in your liver and brain as well then having a new set of lungs is not going to help that much. Even if there was a mechanical lung (apart from the "iron lung" which already exists but would be not use to someone with lung cancer) then if the cancer is in the rest of the body then you aren't going to live any longer. Lung cancer is a fast growing, fast spreading cancer. And the worst thing about it? Its preventable. The vast majority of lung cancer comes from breathing in toxic stuff, like cigarette smoke, or dust from mining, etc.

Yes they can ... if you can find one. Lung cancer expands but has no function. The mucus it produces blocks aveoli from functioning, and the extra mass of tissue compresses them so they also cannot function neither. Intense radiation therapy causes cells to die - normal and cancerous. It causes inflammation of the lung so that it also blocks aveoli. Besides, destroying a section of lung through chemotherapy can also cause bleeding into the cavity. Mechanical lungs have been invented. They just haven't minimised it. I'm sorry, but the outlook is bleak.

theoretically if the cancer doesn't metastasis, a new lung can be created by the stem cells.
Stem cells have the ability to become similar to the cells they replace, and there were IRON LUNGS arround in the 1930`s
