    Wow... so many answers to this question... When it's alive, it's a conch as someone else mentioned... a conch is a large aquatic snail... they make really good chowder and fritters... a large hermit crab would move into one of the right size after the conch is dead... or if not a hermit crab (Here I'm going into just animals that I'VE seen living in them in the Indian River Lagoon (which is one of the most diverse estuarys in North America): baby flounder, mudskippers, toadfish, lizardfish, sponges, shrimp, fiddler crabs, young blue crabs... and bunches of other little things that I'm not quite sure what they are... anything that's small enough to use a conch shell for shelter will do it.
