What is a good American History book?

What is a good book about the history of American news media and/or the development of the philosophy behind modern principles of journalistic ethics?

  • I have a book (which I haven't read yet) called http://www.amazon.com/Muckraking-Landmark-Articles-Ellen-Fitzpatrick/dp/0312089449/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381385495&sr=8-1&keywords=0312089449 by Ellen Fitzpatrick, which (I'm told) gives the stories of three landmark exposés from the late 19th century and a little glimpse into the origins of modern investigative journalism. But it's only a glimpse. I'm searching for a book that covers a much broader expanse of time and goes into the philosophy and rationale for the ethical principles, the mechanisms by which they are taught and enforced, and covers as broad an expanse of time as possible. If it's a thousand pages long, that's just fine by me.

  • Answer:

American Media History by Anthony R. Fellow is a good one. I read it when I took journalism history class in college. Everything is pretty clear and easy to read. For journalism principles, you should read The Elements of Journalism by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel as well as Living Journalism by Rich Martin.
