How far into space do stellar winds reach? Particularly those of an O-type star.
-
I just check out an apod and it was of the bubble nebula. The nebula is around ten light years across and its roughly spherical shape is said to be deformed by intense stellar winds from an O-type star. In the picture it's the bright white/blue star slightly above and to the right of the nebula's center.

"The http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/260060/heliopause is the theoretical boundary where the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_wind is stopped by the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_medium; where the solar wind's strength is no longer great enough to push back the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_wind of the surrounding stars." - Wikipedia & Encylclopaedia Britannica "The heliopause is about 123 http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/40036/astronomical-unit-AU-or-au (AU; 18 billion km [11 billion miles]) from the Sun. The shape of the heliopause fluctuates and is influenced by a wind of interstellar gas caused by the Sunâs motion through space. The orbits of all the major http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/463008/planet, including http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/175962/Earth, lie well within the heliopause. The only spacecraft to cross the heliopause has been http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/633197/Voyager 1, which was launched in 1977 and reached it in 2012. Voyager 1 discovered the location of the heliopause by observing an increase of http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/139234/cosmic-ray particles coming into the http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/553008/solar-system after they passed through the boundary and by detecting the radio emission generated when material thrown off by the Sun in coronal mass ejections crossed it." - http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/260060/heliopause http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_wind may also be viewed in terms of loss of matter emanating from the sun in question. "A star like our sun loses about 10-14 M¤ per year from winds blowing between 200 to 300 km s-1 from the quiet solar surface, and 700 km s-1 from coronal holes [...] Hot luminous stars [e.g., O-type] conversely, exhibit much stronger winds, losing up to 10-5 M¤ per year via winds "blowing" at speeds up to 2,000 km s-1." - http://www.peripatus.gen.nz/astronomy/stewin.html BTW: "An O-type main-sequence star (O V) is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_sequence (core http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen-burning) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectral_classification O and luminosity class V. These stars have between 15 and 90 times the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_mass of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_temperature between 30,000 and 52,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelvin. They are between 30,000 and 1,000,000 times as luminous as the Sun.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-type_main-sequence_star#cite_note-1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-type_main-sequence_star#cite_note-2 These stars are rare; it is estimated that there are no more than 20,000 in the entire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-type_main-sequence_star#cite_note-3 Examples include http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%A3_Orionis_A and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_Lacertae." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-type_main-sequence_star Viz. specific references on O-type stellar wind, this is the best I've been able to find (have fun with the math!)
