    Undergraduate education is intended to be more holistic. Although you choose your degree field/specialty, you take courses on a variety of topics in the physical sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Graduate school, on the other hand, is a forum for increased focus on your chosen field. Your studies are largely limited to this area, and you further specialize in your chosen area of expertise. Your course load is less (about 9 hours a semester rather than 15), but the work required in these courses is of a significantly greater quantity and the expected quality of your work is higher. In graduate school, you either are aiming for a Master's degree or a PhD, and as such, you are generally expected to write a long work on research you have done yourself (a thesis or a dissertation). You further refine your area of expertise as you move into the PhD level.

The terminology can be a little confusing. A university can have both undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate programs earn you a Bachelor's degree, and a graduate program earns you a Master's degree or PhD. So if I say that I am going to "grad school" it just means that I am working towards a Master's or PhD, but the university I'm attending probably also includes students earning Bachelor's degrees.

Undergrad is basically (and usually) the first years of college, getting a major, bachelor's degrees etc. Graduate school is when you begin doing more in depth and specific work to get higher degrees (masters, doctorates, etc)
