What is an easy job to get in Vegas with no experience?

IIM PGP Application - Work Experience related query Hypothetically, I get a great CAT score and I am shortlisted for IIM - A,B, C interview. Dilemma in justification of my profile (non IT/ lesser well known but better job profile startup institute)?

  • Here is the story. I had been working in a software firm as Systems Engineer for about a year now - then found a better job profile in a startup institute, as a business developer - which elevated my level of managerial and business related knowledge. I was also able to make a positive impact in the revenue buildup of the institute. However, the institute isn't listed in NSE/BSE, but in mid-May the institute plans to go online. Firstly, I was very depressed to see the PDF list of PGP 2013 Summer placements in IIMB. 95% of them or more, were from IT sector and well known companies only. Secondly, in the PGDM application (2013) for PI/WAT of IIMC, the work experience sector states that in case the applicant is working in a company that isn't short listed in NSE/BSE, the applicant is required to attach a note detailing the business - with the profit and turnover (in my case I will be able to do so.) So these questions arise in my mind : 1. Will the IIMs definitely consider the job experience in startup as relevant experience (once after providing detailed job experience with the institute's profit and turnover) or is this just an eyewash to reject candidates with job experience in startup/lesser well known companies? 2. Do IIMs give value only to the brand name or will they accept people with diverse applications (with the better profile than mundane IT professional job profile) and give weightage to the start-up sector? 3. Will this startup factor serve as a hindrance to the PGDM application itself? 4. As I have well established myself in this startup institute with a better business role to cater to, I wouldn't shift back to IT industry. Please do advise where I could take this further, without shifting my job till I get into the coveted IIMs? 5. What needs to be highlighted in the form to really stand out (other than the description of my job profile) and compete with the applicants from well-known companies? Kindly let me know. Thanks.

1. Yes..as long as you can prove that the company exists and you had a legitimate role there, the work experience will be considered. Actually, these days diversity is a buzz word..non- IT workex acts as a plus. Also, work experience is not that great a differentiator for entrance interviews. Your undergrad college / academic performance / initiative etc matter more. And fit with college ethos is tested a lot. For example... A is more of a decent all-rounder + humble combo lover. B i think looks either for exceptional acads or significant experience in the industry etc. 2. As for value given to workex, A i believe has 2 segments 1st for 5 points where only duration counts, and second for 5 points where quality of your experience is assessed based on your interview responses..So brand is nice to have (eg. a pre mba PnG or HUL is hard to ignore) but IT brands (Infosys/Wipro) don't really differentiate..(yes workexp with Google California is certainly hard to miss) So dont worry about an IT guy having an advantage over you. They may probably have a slight disadvantage..because highest applicant pool comes from there and institutes want diversity. 3. Start-up experience will not serve as a hindrance (it may actually be a good +ve as it gives interviewers a different and interesting topic to discuss with you) but you may be questioned about why/what was your motivation and all. Make sure you have coherent answers that do not appear too flowery. Don't go and say I did it only for social good or something like that..focus on how it helped you learn new stuff anf also how it made you happy to be part of something new. 4 As of now, try getting into situations/roles that involve people management and decision making. These skills are a big plus where ever you go. 5 Highlight how your role was a better learning opportunity than a run-of-the-mill role with a larger company with set procedures. Hoiw you helped develop and formulate processes/strategies in a unstructured environment which can only be experienced in a new venture. All in all, I would say, don't worry about brand of the employer. A differentiated experience is more important. Also, more depends on how you interact in the interview and what your true motivations are for doing an MBA(IIM interviewers are very good at spotting bullshit) I would suggest that you take some time, and build a coherent story of your life and major decisions that you took (with reasoning)..as this is way more important as compared to your employers brand
