i moved to portland from southern cali as well and absolutely loved it. lived in nw portland near 23rd and that was the absolute best area. trendy, hip, friendly, walking distance to everything, it was perfect!

1,500,000 for a house?? Dude up her you could find a 4000 square foot house on 50 acres for that price, In Laurelhurst you could easily find a big house for 650,000 at 30th and burnside. The weather here is not for the better I can tell you that.

The cost of living is quite a bit lower in Portland. Weather isn't quite as good although the air (I hate LA smog) is better. The Laurelhurst neighborhood is quite pretty with lots of attractive houses. Down side to Portland is the chilly damp winters (and the lack of snow).
