Check with Amtrak at the station you board. We've purchased tickets on train. We also bought tickets round trip at station. It is important to find out what station does what.

If there is no agent to be found at a Metra station, you buy your ticket from the conductor. Though, if it's a "manned" station meaning a ticket agent should have been there you might have to pay a few $ more to purchase from the conductor. The chicago station always has a ticket agent for metra tickets. The chicago station's amtrak desk always has agents. + you can buy your ticket online & either pick it up from an agent or 1 of the quick ticket kiosks located behind the large staircase & in front of the fountain. -> If you are looking at a amtrack ticket agent ... turn around... there are the kiosks.
