How do I hook up a alternator to a plain battery?

Will i need a new battery or alternator to hook up a 1200 watt amplifier in my car?

  The best answer you can get at this point is a guess. W/o knowing what car you have and determining the capability of its electrical system, PLUS not knowing specifically what amp you're dealing with there is no way to give you an informed answer. If you're dealing with a low-end 1200-1400w MAX/PEAK amp then there's almost no car that should have any difficulty powering it as the actual rms power may be as low as 300 or 400w rms resulting in average current requirements of 10-20A. On the other hand - if you're talking about high quality 1200-1400w rms amps and a lighter duty charging system you could have some issues if you like to play it loud a lot. But then again - if you have a big vehicle with a strong elect system it is not likely that much power would cause it any significant problems. Long story short -- more info.
