How much wood do I need to make a subwoofer box?

What do i need to make a subwoofer box?

  • what do i need to make a suboofer box a enclosed box a memphis mojo is gona go in there a 12 inch what kinda of wood do i need and what kind of glue

  • Answer:

Don't listen to the guy that says 1/2" is the most you need. 1/4" is absurd, so this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. 3/4" has been the standard for years for most applications. 1/2" will flex and you will lose volume and sound quality. The best silicone is GE Silicone II.

you'll need 3/4 inch mdf wood and silicon sealant. then obviously the drill, screws, etc

Like other have already said, 3/4" MDF is the best. Remember that you can NEVER have too strong of an enclosure. Add bracing to add support but make sure to count for it's displacement. Also, make sure to get a good quality wood glue. This is very important because it is what is going to hold you enclosure together. It will also help seal the enclosure. Make sure to use the manufacturer's recommendations for enclosure size. Pre-drilling all holes is a must!!!! Good Luck!!!

you will need at least 3/4 in MDF. it wouldn't hurt to go with something 1" thick for a sub that massive, i would also say a couple pieces of half inch all thread, 4 washers and nuts for it as well to brace it when your done to prevent flexing, as well as the silicone and screws everyone else said, i would also find some hurricane nuts and screws that fit them to hold the woofer in with so that you don't weaken your box every time you take the sub out.

If freedumb is a Pro Installer ....Man i want to know what shop he works for so i can stay far away from it !!!! 3/4 MDF is the standard for sub enclosures..and more if building a very intense SPL system..only less thickness is used in kick panel pods, amp covers...and detail work....... If shopping for MDF at hardware stores...ask if they have seconds....meaning it is not a 100% a 4x8sheet.....usually a few millimeters out...No big deal in sub cabinet construction.and you will save some $$ Carpenter glue is one thing you will need 1.5" wood screws and i have never been a fan of silicone...due to it drys up ( stinks awful) and flakes off....never really making a really good seal..at least where it gets cold...plus try painting over it ...( not going to happen ) For years i have used "MONO" Latex chalking...drys fast does not stink...can be painted..and the best part is it will expand/shrink with the changes of weather....but i have yet to have a cabinet leak with using it. one last word of advise is ...pre-drill all holes prior to using screws....MDF will crack and then leak air if not pre drilled
