What type of wood do I need to make a subwoofer box?

MDF!

don't use solid wood. use MDF or plywood 3/4 inch thick plywood is sufficient. Some people choose to use thick 1 inch plywood, but this will add bulk and weight to the subwoofer box. you should use some nice fiberglass or MDF (medium density fiberboard) or high grade particle board.
