    i live in new york city, and its really no different from any other northeastern city in winter, make sure to bring your camera to take pics of the great nyc sights and bring plenty of money, preferably in travelors checks when you get there, make sure to stop by the tourism centers and collect maps and brochures detailing many attractions to visit in the city

Not shoes, boots for walking that are warm. It is very windy and cold in the winter. Bring a good hat and a scarf you can wrap around your face and gloves for your hands. Have room for them in your backpack for when you go inside. YOu will freeze waiting to get a taxi or walking to subway.
