    You must have mis-typed the address, or perhaps you were given the wrong address. I do it all the time, so I know it works. Have the person you are trying to email send you and email first. That way you will know you have the right address.

I receive tons of email from my friends that are (still) using Yahoo mail, and my Gmail account has no problem receiving/sending it. You may want to check the spelling of the destination gmail address.
