How To Get Free Tld Domain?

Does it matter if I misspell my domain name?

  • I have a domain name registered as "techxperts" but would like to switch it to "techxprts" because that's the only way I can get a .com tld. and a registered trademark. Does it matter if I choose a misspelled name instead? It seems to work for brands like tumblr and flickr.

Huh, that's remarkable that you were able to register that domain name today. I would have thought a variant like that would have been purchased already. Anyway, I think that is a fine name. Shorter than the properly spelled version, yet everyone will immediately understand what it is meant to say. Language purists may quibble, but these days, you've got to be creative if you want a .com extension. While I am generally positive about misspellings, they do present some challenges. Inevitably, some number of people will get confused about what spelling to use - I know I did just now checking trademark database and other sources. This means people may end up on other sites from time to time. To the extent that those sites sell identical things to what you sell, then you may lose business to them. If your business is distinct, then presumably many will try again to find you. One thing to help offset this is to develop strong branding so that people recognize you specifically in the marketplace. As part of that, your logo should somehow try to highlight the misspelling so that it sticks in people's minds. For instance, simple idea would be to have the 'x' larger or stronger like how these people have highlighted the 'x' - http://www.xchange-events.com/ - in a somewhat similar situation. In terms of trademarking, I'm not sure what country you are seeking trademark in, but in the USA, there is a live registered trademark for the name 'techxpert'. If you are doing business in the same class of business as they are, then there may be some issues because the names may be considered confusingly similar. You would need to get some solid legal counsel to evaluate the situation. Hope that helps.

get ready to spend the life of the company saying "without the two 'e's'" numerous times every day. I strongly advise friends to NEVER get names like this.

I don't see you changing much: one typo for another. I think you're working too hard for the com, but I understand.
