Meta tags in Wordpress?

Are open graph tags sufficient as meta-tags or do you still need the old fashioned meta-description tags, etc. as well?

  • We are implementing a new website and are not sure if you need to use both, open graph tags and the standard meta tags or if it is sufficient to only use open graph tags. Take the meta-description tag for example?

  • Answer:

Meta description is what shows up in the SERPs on google, so you still need those. Meta keywords are irrelevant and have been for many years now. You should also consider setting up your site for Twitter Cards if you haven't already. https://dev.twitter.com/docs/cards

Jens is correct. While auditing a site, I noticed they had no description tags but did have Open Graph tags. I was 99% sure they needed traditional description tags so to get to that 100% I compared SERP results vs the OG tags for a few pages. Google did NOT use the OG description tag. It instead pulled random text from the page which is a big NOOOOO NOOOO.  I also tested in BING and it remains the same rule. Maybe it could change in the future but it's doubtful.
