Saver return tickets?

Why does cityrail charge more for peak hour return tickets than it does for off peak return tickets?

  • this is stupid, i live in asquith and i catch the train to st leonards twice a week during peak hour, i have to pay $8.40 for a return where as if i bought it after 9am and before 4pm ...show more

  • Answer:

Well yeah thats the way its always worked, most people start work between about 7.30 and 9.00 so the trains are jam-packed before 9.00 and pretty much empty after that,it costs the same to send an empty train on a trip as a full one so they give you some incentive to travel after 9.00 by offering a discount,go to any station between 8.45 and 9.00 and you will see a whole bunch of people standing around near the ticket booth/machine waiting for 9.00 so they can save a couple of bucks, same thing happens in the afternoon..

A better way of looking at it is "why does cityrail charge less for off-peak travel than it does for peak hour travel?". The answer to that is easy - to encourage people to travel off-peak.

Tom, that's why it's called Peak Hour, it's the busiest time, so to reduce the congestion, they offer an incentive if you can travel in off peak.
