Is it possible to get a hotel room without booking?

    You don't have to book but you can't turn up at 2am and expect to get a room. Decide when you leave for the night out.

A lot of hotels will accept guests who book in on the day they arrive, if they have rooms available. But not late at night. A lot of places don't have 24 hour staff, and if you're staying there, you have a key card to get in after hours. So I don't fancy your chances if you rock up late at night. I wouldn't depend on a five star hotel having 24 hours reception either. I regularly stay in 5 star places in various parts of Australia and NZ and I can tell you that they DON'T all have a 24 hour concierge.

actually it is possible and actually there are hotels with reception open 24 hours a day they are called 5 star hotels

Michael, I thought I would have problems in Sydney, I was sent over there on an hours notice. The office did not book a hotel for me. I arrived at Mascot airport after a 27 hours of flying time, caught a cab and showed up, at the Hyatt on Park. Not only did they look after me with a room, I asked if I was to late for breakfast. Told them what I wanted, buy the time they got me to my room and unpacked, breakfast was knocking on the door. But I will admit, it was not peak or holiday season, it was not the Christmas New Years period, if it was, I would have been really stuck.

Yes. BUT, are you feeling lucky? Lots of factors to consider here - and if you are a half drunk obnoxious idiot - early morning - after being rebuffed by all the hotels within cooeee! - then you might try the'new'.. POLICE BED AND BREAKFAST.. true! they are opening some rooms for that purpose in Newcastle, Sydney, and Wollongong - as an experiment.. they will do your laundry, next after breakfast, give you a bus fare home, and maybe a nice policewoman will hold your hand so you wont get mugged!

Totally depends WHERE in Australia, WHICH hotel/motel and WHEN. If it's new years, NO you will not get a room. If it's a random wednesday night then probably, but you can't get a room really late at night at most places. This is like asking "is it possible to get a hotel room without booking in america"
