    When Darwin wrote "On the Origin of Species" (published in 1859) he knew nothing about genetics and still had not read Mendel when he died. Darwin never mentioned genetic anything in his work. He did speak of variation within species leading to natural selection which described genetic variation and random mutation without knowing about genes.
