During terrifying, after.....how can one quantify how it feels to see ones entire city destroyed? Ive been through a small one, I would hate to go through a storm the size of Tracy. My Aunt and Uncle lost everything in Tracy, their car was turned into a pancake and the only reason they weren't killed is because they had flown to Perth to spend Christmas with family. My uncle helped with the rebuilding of the city so my cousins lived there during the aftermath. My cousin sums it up by saying "you know its pretty bad when to get home from school you have to carry a stick to beat the feral dogs off......" Humans and animals alike were left homeless, the entire city full of non essential personnel were shipped out.........it created a group of issues far past the initial storm.

There are plenty of newspaper accounts written at the time that you can find using Google. A major problem with TC "Tracy" was that it arrived on Christmas Eve and despite having heard about fifty warnings, many people continued to party. The houses in Darwin at the time were not built to withstand a tropical cyclone, the previous one to hit Darwin was forty years earlier and everyone had forgotten what they can do. The TV series about TC "Tracy" was grossly inadequate and while making a good story it was a long way from reality. I was talking to Darwin during the storm and was one of the last people to get through on the phone. The people I was talking to said "Oh oh, the roof's going" and the line was cut. Check the newspaper accounts, there are some great stories there.

For the Adults it was horrifying, For the children it was terrifying, It was double bad for the wee ons Santa did not come to Darwin . When it was over Friends I knew from there reported to me how much they appreciated the gestures of help they received from others in Australia when evacuated. At the place they were Santa was able to visit for the wee ones. A moment of joy during a very hard time. EDIT this video will give you an idea what is like in a cyclone turn your speakers up.

A very good friend of mine was seriously injured in that cyclone. She sheltered in the toilet of the house she was in & it collapsed in on her. She received bad injuries to her chest area. She said it was an eerie feeling prior to the house being struck & then it was terrifying.

In the Darwin Museum there is a Cyclone Tracy room, where they try to emulate the experience of the cyclone. I don't know how accurate it is, but the room is pretty scary.

Scary as most weren't expecting it... There is a miniseries made around it which might give you some idea.
