What is the best place to study in Europe or the UK?

Is the uk a safe place to visit for americans?

  • people keep telling me Europe isnt a safe place to visit , etc. And I plan on visiting the UK (study abroad) in a year or so but everyone telling me I shouldnt and is starting to ...show more

  • Answer:

Where are you in the US? Hicksville? The UK is perfectly safe for Americans, especially students. Nottingham has a bit of a bad rep for gun crime but that applies to everybody here. The Chicago of the UK. Actually, not really. I think some statistics on gun crime was misrepresented. Don't take this the wrong way but we perceive crime to be greater in the US than the UK due to you guys being allowed to carry guns. I would be more concerned about getting your visa, finances and a place at a British University sorted out first.

It is substantially safer than the US! We tend to like Americans - some have problems with the stereotypical arrogant yank, and with the American government's poorly thought out foreign policies, but generally no one will say or do anything to concern an American tourist. Where do Americans get these ridiculous notions that they will be attacked in the UK?

'People'? 'Everyone'? Really? And what qualifies these morons to make these statements? Why do you take notice of them?

The UK is safe, we don't get earthquakes, tornadoes, big floods and we have no active volcanoes. We don't have major diseases either or bugs that can bite. In terms of crime, the majority of the UK is peaceful and safe. The only places which have crime are some parts of the inner cities of Manchester, Liverpool, London and Nottingham. Belfast can also be slightly dangerous because of an IRA presence, although in the last decade that has gone away significantly.

You are coming from a country that has the highest murder rate in the western world. ANY country is safer than america.

Not 'safe'? Really? This isn't Rio... Like anywhere can be dangerous of you go into the dodgy areas, but I very much doubt it is more dangerous than the US, in fact we don't have guns for a start (not legally anyway). There are certain places around the UK I wouldn't suggest a person, who doesn't know the area well enough, go alone, or at all... But the same can be said for the US Also Europe is a BIG place and you cannot just catagorise it like that. I wouldn't suggest you walk alone in Saint Petersburg at night, but walk along a Basse Normandy country lane and I don't think they've ever reported a crime... It depends where you are going :) What Uni are you going to, I might know it?

It's no less safe than the USA, believe me! The USA has the highest rate per capita of murders than any other Western country. If anything, you'd be safer! Whoever is telling you that is just ignorant, or had a bad experience. However, if you go to the UK and want to go to Northern Ireland, stay as far away from the topic of The Troubles as you can. No place in the world is safe. If you decided on where you want to visit based on how safe it is, you would never travel anywhere. Being adventurous means taking a risk.

If you have survived in America where any idiot can own a gun...... the UK is an extremely safe place........... you really do have to be joking, just look a the statistics

Maxi

Your friends are blithering idiots. The UK is much, much safer than the US. We have little to no gun crime, whereas any idiot can get hold of firearms in the US. Not to mention that our average crime rate is 30% lower than the US average. If I were you, I would make new friends who actually know things.

Yeah in Europe everyone has to carry a gun for personal safety... oh no wait, that's the USA. Almost all parts of Europe are safer than the USA and the standard of living is quite a bit higher in some countries too. Look at the countries - The USA has a murder rate of 4.8 murders per 100,000 people. The UK has a rate of 1.23 The Netherlands 0.87 Denmark 0.85 Norway 0.68 You're a lot less likely to be murdered in Europe than in America.
