Answer:
Do be aware that for all those advocating taking the tube to Paddington and then the Heathrow Express, that it's MUCH more expensive and not all that much faster once you've switched from the Underground to HEx - Underground all the way takes about 60 mins and costs around £4.50 cash, Underground to Paddington will be £4 cash + around £20 for HEx (precise cost depends on where and when you buy the ticket).

the Piccadilly line is the most direct route, and takes an hour, but it is very busy ,overcrowded, and noisy. I would prefer to take the Circle line to Padddington, and then get the Heathrow express, this takes 15 minutes. there are courtesy buses to each terminal

Follow the signs to the Underground station. Then follow the signs to the Piccadilly line Westbound platform. Look at the indicator to see which trains are coming, they all don't go to the same destination. Two Tubes go to Heathrow, one to Terminals 1,2,3 and 4 and the other to Terminals 5 and 1,2,3. Make sure you take the right Tube for your terminal. Check the front of the train too.

Kings Cross overground station has signs leading you to the Underground station. They are llinked together. From there it is the Piccadilly line all the way to Heathrow, about a one hour journey.

BEWARE: Heathrow airport has 2 routes from Kings Cross St Pancras FAST or SLOW route. 1. Easy, direct but takes MUCH LONGER ! - Use the Underground railway service (called Tube), take the Piccadilly Line between London St. Pancras International (Kings Cross) and Heathrow the journey takes 60-80 minutes. 2. 50% faster saving vital minutes ! - Take the Underground railway, the Hammersmith and City line from London St. Pancras International (Kings Cross) the journey takes 10 - 15 minutes to Paddington. Take the Heathrow Express from Paddington to Heathrow this journey takes only 10-15 minutes, See live train schedules: http://stpancras-international.co.uk/?station=live-train-times p.s 3. From St Pancras railway station directly to Paris takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.
