Your best bet is to look at the suburbs around London. I would advise that you try and get a job first before you find a place. The reason for this is that most rentals are handled through estate agents. The estate agents will want to make a contract with you for a let of either 6 months minimum or 12 months minimum rental. You then need to pay 1 month's rent up front in advance as well as 1 month's rent additionally to cover a deposit against any damage. You also need to prove that you can pay the rent which means showing them a payslip or having an employed person stand as guarantor for you. This means that if you can't pay your rent, this person is legally responsible for paying your rent. A parent would be suitable for this if they trust you. If you have enough cash saved up already for around 5 months rent plus living expenses then I would say go for it. www.findaproperty.com is a good place to start looking for rental places.

Gumtree. http://www.gumtree.com/flatshare-offered/london You should be here already to look for a place. On your budget you will sharing and people like to meet their new flatmates, most people wont rent you room without meeting you. Come and stay in a youth hostel to look for your room from there. http://www.accommodationlondon.net/ some are £5 per night. You'll need a job or a huge amount of money for a landlord to let a room to. If you have no income or no capital, they might ask for a guarantor to promise to pay the rent if you can not.

I can't help you with apartments, have you tried looking for a studio? Suitable for one or two people, cheap, and efficient. Normally it's £200 /pw so it is slightly over your budget but it is the cheapest thing I know.

Have a look on www.gumtree.com. If your budget is up to £500 you may have to house share. Rent a room instead of an apartment as it is very expensive in London to Rent. You can look at areas in East Or South London such as Croydon you may have better luck but some of the areas which are cheaper are less desirable. Hope this helps

It is advisable to see the property before you agree or pay a deposit, to avoid being scammed, or paying for something that is not suitable. This is important for such web sites as Gumtree. Try this web site - it seems more trustworthy.https://www.airbnb.co.uk/s/London--United-Kingdom
