  Until last year Paris restaurants used to be grubby, smoke-filled dumps (unless you're willing to spend hundreds of $). Italian restaurants aren't much better. Now restaurants in France are smoke-free, but they can still be filthy and full of hostile middle-eastern types. Try the street-side casse-croute stands if you find the cafes repulsive. You'll probably conclude that the best restaurants are in America.
