  • Im going on a cruise tomorrow Norwegian Cruise Line (Jewel). And the departure area is in New York. Irene is supposed to hit New York Tomarrow, so how will i get to New York if ...show more

  • Answer:

Here is what NCL is saying about your cruise: Norwegian Jewel will return to New York early on Saturday, August 27 and guests currently on board will disembark beginning at 6 am. Embarkation for the August 27 cruise will commence earlier beginning at 10 am. The ship will depart three hours earlier than scheduled at 1 pm. All guests are advised to arrive at the pier between 10 am and noon. Once the ship is underway, there may be a change to the scheduled Bahamas & Florida itinerary. Airlines are cancelling flights beginning Saturday afternoon. If you are flying in, you may have problems, but if you are driving in things should be fine

Cruise ships (or any ships for that matter) never stay in port during a hurricane as they can be severely damaged. They do far better out to sea, so they will leave far in advance of an approaching hurricane. The latest from the NCL website (www.rcl.com) states that the Jewel will leave early from NYC tomorrow. You might want to keep tabs on it. So if NCL is leaving by 3pm on Sat, they will be well out of the way of the storm before it hits. But a lot of flights have been cancelled, so you may have some difficulty in getting to NYC. The latest I have heard is that all of NYC is not being evacuated, only the low-lying areas in three of the boroughs - which is still a lot of people. The biggest evacuation area I think is Long Island. If you bought cruise insurance, and if you cannot make it to NYC, they might fly you to the next port to pick up the ship. But if you don't have a passport, this might be impossible. If you spent $4,000 on a cruise, hopefully you bought cruise insurance. http://www.caribbean-cruising.net

But, you're not going on a "dam" cruise - you're going on NCL! [The Holland ships are called "dam" ships because their names all end in -dam.] Sounds like you're expecting a catastrophe to hit NYC. None of the forecasts I've heard are saying anything like that. But they are closing the airports and shutting down the mass transit system at Noon on Saturday, so that's going to cause some problems. Hopefully, you are flying there the day before or are driving. From what I've heard/read, the Jewel will be leaving port early. They don't want the ship in port during a hurricane. Better check with the cruise line ASAP. You're likely to have a very rough ride the first day or so, so be sure you bring your anti-motion sickness meds. Hopefully, you have cancellation insurance for your cruise, since you paid so much, so that you can cancel if you feel it's necessary. Good luck.

The dam hurricane is not hitting new york until Sunday. The dam city will survive and so will you dam cruise. You should be able to get on the dam cruise tomorrow with no problem! Check the dam cruise line website for updated information. Have a dam good time on your dam cruise.

Burt.

If New York is being evacuated you will not be able to get to New York at all. Considering New York is a direct hit for the hurricane, it will be pretty bad. The city will probably be flooded and yes, buildings will be destroyed. They will probably not let cruise ships out because the hurricane is going to be in areas of water and it will be very strong. Sorry, but you will most likely not be going on that cruise! Hope I helped!
