What should I take on my Caribbean cruise?

I am a 50yr old woman going on a caribbean cruise what clothes should I take?

  • Answer:

I went to the Caribbean in February of 2008 and it was my first cruise. One thing I learned is that you don't want to over-pack. Take the bare minimum of what you need. And from reading this, you'll know that the bare minimum is already a lot. Shampoo and conditioner they already have for you on the ship. You may want to bring other personal toiletries, such as deodorant, shaving cream, razor, etc. Blow dryers they already have. They also have towels, as well. Bring a toothbrush and toothpaste. Don't forget any vital medicine you may need, either. I imagine a life-flight at sea is pretty expensive. Obviously, you don't need to bring any food, water, drinks, or anything like that. Bring enough clothes for one week (if that's how long you're going for. Bring enough clothes accordingly). If you're going to the Caribbean, bring 5 or 6 pairs of shorts and short-sleeve shirts. You want to bring a fresh pair of "unmentionables" for everyday, and fresh socks as well. A swimsuit, maybe a pair or two of pants, a light jacket, a tuxedo/dinner jacket and tie, dress pants, dress socks, and dress shoes. Women should bring a dinner dress. Depending on what you plan on doing, maybe some hiking boots, and some long socks. If you plan on exercising (because YOU WILL eat a lot. Guaranteed), bring a pair of sneakers and some gym-appropriate clothes. Most cruise ships have a jogging track, tennis and basketball court, and an actual fitness center with all of the equipment and amenities you would find at a regular gym. Don't forget sunglasses (the sun is EXTREMELY powerful down there. I burned my retinas last time, and it hurts like nothing else), and sunscreen (SPF: 50 and above). Always take 1 bag of carry-on luggage with you. There's always the chance of you losing your luggage. When we landed in Puerto Rico, it took us almost an hour to find our luggage. Nothing will ruin your vacation faster than losing EVERYTHING for your vacation. Put a change or two of clothes in your carry-on. Bring a passport. I know that on some closed-loop cruises (cruises that leave and come back to the same port) bound from the U.S., you can use a State-issued birth certificate and a driver's license, but get a passport. If something goes wrong (I hope not (i.e., getting left behind, arrested, etc.)), you'll be glad you had one. Never leave your country without proper identification. This is important: DO NOT pack your passports, plane tickets, and boarding passes in your checked luggage (it accidentally happens)! If your bag gets lost with your cruise documents or passports, you may be denied boarding on the ship, and possibly, the plane. Pack all of your plane, cruise, government, and hotel documents in your carry-on luggage. Another important piece of information. All of your liquids or gels (shaving cream, medicine, contact solution, etc.) over 3.4 ounces in volume, will have to go into your checked luggage (put your razor in your checked bag, too). If it's 3.4 ounces or less, you may bring it on the plane. Also, make sure that if you do bring liquids in quantities of 3.4 ounces or less on board, be sure that they are in containers appropriate for the amount. Otherwise, if you try to go through airport security with these items in your bag, you will either, a) be denied boarding, or b) be forced to throw them away. Neither of which you want. Some exceptions are vital medications, baby formulas, baby food, etc. (in reasonable quantities. Don't try to bring Costco-sized tubs on the plane, lol.) For more information on the "3-1-1" rule when boarding an airplane, go to the Transportation Safety Administration's website: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm I HIGHLY recommend you take a look at this. Oh yeah, don't forget your plane tickets, passports, and boarding passes... You forget these, and nothing else I described above matters. Don't get too preoccupied with preparing that you forget the important necessities. Also, enjoy the time of preparing. Waiting is one of the funnest parts for me, anyways. Have fun, be safe, and good luck!

This is what I took when I was 50 years old to the Caribbean. I took shorts, T shirts, swim wear, sandals, sun dresses and plenty of sun tan lotion and a hat too. Leave home jeans, jackets, and anything that is heavy. Also be sure your makeup is water proof too as it is humid there

a bunch of light clothing. you're going to be walking around alot so be comfortable. and take maybe a nice dress in case you want to eat at one of the nice restaurants or take a picture with the captain.

That depends on what kind of 50 yo woman you are. My MIL is turning 60 and she would take bathing suit after bathing suit. It would be bathing suits and simple shorts/tshirt for day wear. Mostly bathing suits b/c like my husband and I, she would be by the pool every day. My mother is 60 and we took a cruise in April. She brought a bathing suit that I don't believe she ever put on. She wore "casual" clothing but much better casual clothing. You know--shirt and shorts in an outfit. She wore that each day b/c she planned on spending most of the day doing stuff. Each day you will get a newsletter that contains everything going on on the ship that day. She went to the course on flower arranging, technology classes, and a few other things. In which case you'll want to be a bit more covered as some of those rooms are COLD! But for me personally, I'm a beach bum. I bring 4 bathing suits and 4 sarongs and maybe one tshirt but usually only a super soft one in case I get sunburned. Do you go to the gym? If so, you'll want some tennis shoes and gym wear. They have incredible gyms onboard. For the evening you'll need dressy clothing. On a 7 day cruise, 2 nights will be formal. Cocktail dresses or long dresses. The maxi dresses that are so in style right now will be everywhere on the cruise. At night you need to be "resort casual". No shorts, no tank tops after 6 pm. I personally wear a very casual dress most nights. However many people will be in dress pants and a shirt, so it really depends on you and your personality. You of course do not have to dress up for formal night. If you don't want to, you can eat in any of the other locations on board. It will be warm. I don't care if you go in December. I have cruised over New Years Eve and gotten a nice tan. I have a dress very similar to this that is my normal wear http://www.newport-news.com/shop/product_single.aspx?style_id=37686235&index=6&gp_coll_id=9&gp_cat_id=1649&nav_cat_id=1686&category_id=7660 http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=410978&CategoryID=5449 Then something like this would be the formal http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=375829&CategoryID=5449 http://www.bodyc.com/BodyCentral/womens.fashion/itemdetl.html?lvl1=Dresses&lvl2=Jumpsuits&item=3756 I don't know your religious views but for my mom it was just the normal summer dresses that she would wear to church or church socials. Formal night isn't black tie and isn't prom though on some of hte more upscale cruise lines you will see some tuxes. So if your husband wants to wear one, he can and he will feel fine in it. The average night it's just a normal dress. Many people (including me) will wear a dress every night just b/c my husband loves to see me dressed up. It completely depends on you. I know my aunt is a lil more than 50 and she was in a bathing suit, but my mom is more of a capris and sleeveless top type of person. She can't stand the sun. Definitely take a jacket in case it's a little cold. Also great for the nights b/c that after dinner show and the late night comedian rooms are COLD. And the worst is if you go to the art auction. That room is frigid. What shore excursions do you want to do? If you want to go horse back riding, you'll need to have some pants to protect that inside of your leg. If you want to go hiking in the rain forest, what would you want to wear that would cover you and be the most comfortable--key word being RAIN forest. However if you are more of a shopping shore excursion kinda girl, a cute outfit would be perfect. Everything else better go with good shoes b/c you will be walking a lot. Much of the Caribbean is about the same temp year round. Also most people tend to wear bright colors. Hawaiian shirts, sarongs, bright florals are the most common articles worn.

it depends what time of year you go. the weather is typically warm year round. however, it does get cool during the winter months. a light jacket or sweater should be fine. also most cruise ships are kept cold, you may need a sweater there as well. most cruises you will have to "dress" for dinner & perhaps a captains dinner, you'll need cocktail dresses & possible 1 gown. bathing suits, shorts, capri pants sandals and/or comfortable shoes for shore excursions
