First 7-day cruise, will I find enough to do on shore without purchasing excursions?

This is my first week-long cruise which stops at cozumel, belize, cayman islands, etc. Are shore excursions necessary, or would I be fine exploring on my own? I've done it ...show more

Answer:
Of course you can! There will be several vendors outside the port willing to sell you anything from shore excursions to tiny trinkets. You can also purchase a map, rent a car or scooter, and explore the areas on your own. All of thise will be much cheaper than the cruise lines offerings. While in port, sse some basic common sense and you will have a safe enjoyable time. For companies that are highly recommended for independent excursions, visit cruisecritic forums. They have 1000s of travelers just like you who like to save money not using the ships overpriced excursions. FINALLY, THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT: WHEN TRAVELING A NON SHIP EXCURSION, KEEP TRACK OF SHIP TIME. THE CAPTAIN WILL LEAVE YOU! IVE SEEN TONS OF PEOPLE CHASING THE SHIP AS WE PULLED AWAY! Enjoy your cruise!

If you took a shore excursion not provided by the cruise line, and were late getting back to the ship, you would be responsible for transportation expenses to the next port or home. Remember also, in Mexico where there is some violence of late, you may be safer with excursions provided by the cruise line.

There are tons of things to do in cozumel, and cayman islands. If you do a little research before you go, you don't need to book anything through the ship. You can take a taxi or book a tour at the pier. Just be careful if you anchor out that you get back in time to catch the last tender. If you miss it, the ship will NOT wait on you! In Belize I would suggest getting an excursion through the ship. Not a whole lot to do on your own without doing a tour. Also the ship WILL anchor out and its quite a distance to the port. You do NOT want to miss the last tender!!! Another option is just stay on the ship. Most people will be gone so you wont be crowded, and can do whatever you want.

Yes, there will be representatives of private tours waiting for you as you disembark, so you can try them. Or just hang around the beach or stay on the ship and snooze and/or read on the deck. Have a good time!
