Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico on a cruise ship?
-
I'm a US citizen. If I take a cruise, and the ship stops in Cozumel, do I need a passport? I didn't a few years ago, but I think some laws have changed.

Answer:
Here is the correct scoop. If you are a U.S. citizen and are going on a closed loop cruise, that is one that starts and ends from the same American port, then you DO NOT need a passport. You do need a birth certificate and a photo ID such as a driver license. Cruise lines always recommend getting a passport in case you somehow have to stay in the foreign port(like miss the ship). Without a passport, you could have a very difficult time getting back to the USA

Timetraveler is correct I know for sure if you are going on Carnival. I don't know the rules of other cruise lines but I would guess they follow US policy and would not require one either if on a closed loop cruise. I'm sure you can find this info at the governments website about passports.

what time traveler said is partially correct or at least that's how carnival operates but last time i was on a cruise which was in jun this year i had to have a passport when i was re-boarding my ships. i cant remember if the cozumel port asked for it or if i just showed it, but in progresso the Mexican official guy who was at the gate asked for it he didn't stamp it but he asked for it, and on the boat before getting off they informed us that we should take it...... but all in all u don't need one or that's what carnival told us before we booked. However i got mine rushed just in-case and it was good i did cause when i got back to the states we got rushed threw customs cause the amount of people who didn't have one was extremely backed up and they took us to the line for non American citizens line.
